Finally something new

Well, new to me anyway.  It is a bom I am taking with Amy Gibson at stichery ditchery dock and everyone else is at the August block (it started in January) and I am pulling my fabric from my chosen line right now.
It is from a line of fabric frm Blank quilting that I got a while ago but it has no names on the selvage.

I committed to myself not to start anything new until I had a couple of ufos done.  Well, I got them done (pictures coming soon) and now finally something new!  love always, k

What I am working on...

My messy sewing area

WIP
You know paper piecing? Yeah, that stuff that looks so perfect when done but takes like eight hours just to do one twelve inch block... Well, I have been working on a BOM from a group with Carol Doak, and everyone else has finished and moved on to greener pastures, but six months after we are supposed to be done, I finally have it all together.

Teyla, my Cat, helping

And, I get a lot of help from my friends... But, I am finally done with the top and working on the back. When I finish that, I will post pictures of them both. But, ssshhh, it's a secret, it is a wedding gift for my nephew who is getting married in a month. More later. Love always, K

Why "Sew Golden a Chance"?

I know that everyone is curious about why I chose the name "Sew Golden a Chance" for my blog.  Okay, not everyone, but maybe someone someday might be, so I will talk about it anyway.

Sheela

My best buddy Sheela, my forever puppy, just passed a few weeks ago.  It may be longer than that but it seems like only a few days.  I miss her every day, I miss her smile, her annoying barking, her steps always right behind mine, and her fierce love and loyalty.
My Sweet Sheela

Two years ago we got a golden retriever puppy named Sadie for my husband.  While he thought he really wanted a dog of his own, he never really found enough time for her, nor was he really enthusiastic about the care she took.

Sadie
When Sheela passed, I was heartbroken.  I knew she could not be replaced, but still I yearned for my own puppy.  My dh told me that I could have Sadie.  I didn't want to take her away from him and frankly, Sadie seemed to lack the personality and feistiness I love in a dog.  He kept on with this idea, telling me to "give Sadie (the golden retriever) a chance."

I know, you can see it now.  Sadie has developed a great personality and  while I would not call her feisty, she definitely has a lot more sparkle to her.  That's how "sew golden a chance" was born.

Besides, "Sew Mama Sew" and "Molli Sparkles" were already taken...  Love always, K

thorny Thursday

I know I put a picture of this cute cuddle monster up yesterday but I still haven't gotten past how cute he turned out... and in honor of finishing one quilt top yesterday, I had to go to the quilt shop today. I will put up my new picture tomorrow but I have a story to tell.

My friend and I were discussing baby quilts with a couple of women who just walked into the shop. One was a new grandma who was going to make a quilt for her new grandson. Well, of course Carol and I are more than willing to give our advice out whether they need it or not... So, it reminded me of the cute quilt monster I made for my own grandson and how much I missed in not seeing him over the past year of his life. (Another story, another day).

Well, the daughter came with her six week old baby and of course the grandma forced her daughter to bring that gorgeous boy to meet Carol and me so we could do our best ooohh and aaaahhh thing, and believe me it wasn't hard to find the ooohhhs and aaahhhs because that baby (sound asleep of course) was just about as cute as they come.

And that grandma asked me and Carol what we were buying all our fabric for, to which I announced "it is for the ever growing pile of great fabric that I have to have for some project I will come up with someday". And, she thought I was kidding.

Anyway, I called this post thorny Thursday for a reason. everyone names their Thursday posts with names like "terrific" or something with only a "t" sound. But Thursday is a "th" and we quilters just need to come up with a charming "th" for Thursday. So there's my Thursday challenge, come up with a good "th" for next week. love always, k

It has taken forever...

Okay, so it has taken forever for me to get started blogging. I have to admit, I have been saying, "well, I have to get (insert thing) done before I start..." and "well, I have to have the perfect thing to say..." and "well, I have to (insert anything)" so that I can do a good blog. My husband has been telling me to stop worrying about saying the right thing or having the right thing to put up, just start blogging!... So, here I am. Hello world, my name is Kay Holm, and I have been and done many things so far in my life. In fact, I started a blog once after I had a serious head injury in a car wreck, but that was just too dang depressing. So, starting over with a new theme, Sew Golden A Chance. There is a story behind that, and I will blog about that soon, but today is going to be about my absolutley adorable monster quilt I made for my grandson who is nearly one and whom I have yet to meet, another story for another day... Here it is!
Isn't it just so cute? The pattern is called "Cuddle Monsters" and it is by Whistlepig Creek Productions. It is made with dinosaur print fabric and super soft cuddle inside which was brushed somehow into stripes which you can see in the big picture. Well anyway, I wasn't planning on making this, but I went to one of my favorite quilt shops in the Twin Cities (I live in a suburb of St. Paul) called Millie P's where they had a sample hanging up in the baby section. I fell in love! The only problem was that they were out of the pattern, the only one they had left was pinned to the sample monster. So I put on my saddest puppy dog face and said, "I neeeeedddd to make this for my Grandson who is getting baptised this coming Sunday... Pleeeeezzz..." Well, the wonderful Millie P's employee took pity on me and made a copy of the cover to pin on the sample and gave me the Last One. I was so happy... Love you Millie P's. More later... Love always, Kay
